2020 Logistics

Logistics (High School Students)

Conference Dates: August 15, 2020 to August 21, 2020, National Taipei University (San Xia Campus)

Conference Events
  • Keynote - A distinguished leader who has had an extraordinary career, who has been dedicated to the improvement of the community, and who embodies the mission of HTLC is invited to open the conference and to address the delegates. Last year, our speaker was Former President Ma Ying-jeou.
  • Lectures/Workshops -  Constituting the main curricula of HTLC, a series of lectures and workshops about different aspects of leadership and civic engagement will be lead by Harvard students. Rather than instructive, they are meant to engage the students in different modes of thinking than they might have encountered in school, and to empower students to take action in their communities by improving their leadership skills. Past lessons include public speaking and debate, negotiation, marketing, and networking.
  • Extracurriculars - Throughout the conference, students will have the opportunity to choose and engage deeply in a non-academic endeavor through sessions each day that are lead by Harvard teachers. Past extracurriculars include theater, hip-hop dancing, poetry, singing, and debate. Each extracurricular group will present a culminating project through a performance during the final show that is held at the end of the conference.
  • Homeroom - Students will be organized into teams of 11 to 12 students, paired with a teaching team of a Harvard teacher, a NTPU teacher, and a Teaching Assistant (TA). During homerooms, there will be daily discussions of topics such as ethics, social impact, and leadership styles.
In the evenings, students in the homeroom will have an opportunity to talk one-on-one with their Harvard teacher in an activity called "Journal Time." During the conversations, students are encouraged to discuss their future aspirations, current struggles, and inspirational thoughts gleaned from daily events during conference. Throughout the week, each homeroom will be working towards a final presentation that they will present on the last day of the conference, which involves a research project about an important issue or problem facing society, and propose possible solutions and next steps that they can take.
  • HTLC Olympics - Compete with other teams for the grand prize.
  • Career Fair - Professionals who are leaders in their fields from the Harvard Club of Taiwan will be invited to share their career experiences with small groups of HTLC delegates. Students have the opportunity to learn about the wide variety of disciplines and occupations, and can make powerful connections with established experts. These relationships often lead to future internships, and encourage delegates towards career possibilities that they might not have otherwise been exposed to. Every participant will take away valuable lessons from the unique struggles that each invited leader has faced during their careers.
  • HTLC Prom - As a part of cultural exchange, Taiwanese students will be able to experience this classic American tradition. They will learn the proper ballroom techniques, and gain confidence socially to express themselves through dance.
  • Speech Contest - Students who are elected from each team will prepare and present a persuasive speech to the conference participants. These selected students will have the chance to be individually coached in the crafting of their speech, and receive constructive feedback for improvements.
  • Intercollegiate cultural exchange - Before and after the high school student portion of the conference, the college staff will engage in a variety of cross cultural activities and professional development workshops. In addition to empowering Taiwanese high school students to become leaders in their communities, an essential component of HTLC is the intellectual and cultural exchange that occurs between the co-hosting university students.
