SEE ANNOUNCEMENT BELOW.
Conference Dates: August 2021 (to be determined)
***IMPORTANT POSTPONEMENT ANNOUNCEMENT***
Dear all,
Due to Harvard’s announcement of strict travel restrictions through August 31 arising from the coronavirus, we are very sad to announce that we must postpone HTLC 2020 to next summer. Though we discussed the possibility of making HTLC virtual/remote, we feel that the interactive, interpersonal, and intercultural parts of HTLC that make the conference so special would not be the same over video chat. Although we are heartbroken that the conference will not happen this year, we still look forward to a summer full of growth and learning on our own.
The application form is now closed. To all students who have already applied, please check your inboxes in the next couple weeks for an email from us. We wish everyone health and happiness, and we hope to see you all next summer.
Love,
Jess and Laura
HTLC 2020 Executive Directors

Thank you for your interest in the 2020 Harvard Taiwan Leadership Conference (HTLC). We will open our application portal in March 2020. Applications will be due at 11:59 pm (GMT+8, Taiwan time) on Sunday, 03 May 2020. No late applications will be accepted. There is no advantage to applying early, as all applications will be reviewed after the deadline passes. Decisions will not be made on a rolling basis.
This year, we will be implementing a $1500 NTD fee for participation in HTLC. While HTLC has not had a fee in the past, after careful consideration, we have decided to implement a fee in order to increase the quality of the conference. The fee is small for a week-long program, but if it poses a financial burden to you, please do not hesitate to reach out to us at htlcexec@gmail.com. We do offer scholarships to cover the participation fee, and in no way do we want finances to be a barrier to your participation.
***Before beginning your application, please read the information on this page about application instructions, eligibility, selection criteria, etc.***
Eligibility: To be eligible to participate in HTLC 2020, applicants must satisfy all of the following criteria:
1) Applicants must be enrolled in 10th 11th, or 12th grade of high school in Taiwan at the time they apply.
2) Applicants must have ROC Identification Card or ROC (Taiwan) Resident Certificate.
Application Instructions:
In order for your application to evaluated, you must complete the application in its entirety by submitting the application form here. Any incomplete applications will not be reviewed, and you will automatically be disqualified without notification. We recommend that you craft your responses in a separate document (save frequently!) and paste your responses when complete rather than directly into the textbox on the application form.
Upon submitting your application, you will receive an automatic email confirmation containing a copy of your responses. Please do not email HTLC staff to inquire about your application status. Application decisions will be sent out via email in late May or early June, so be sure to check your email.
Below, we include some of the statements adapted from the Harvard College Office of Admissions. In evaluating your application to HTLC 2020, we take a similar approach. Do note, however, that the statements and questions below do not constitute a checklist for admission, but rather attempt to elucidate our overall philosophy and value system in selecting participants for HTLC 2020.
Each applicant to HTLC 2020 is considered with great care. We consider each applicant as a whole person, and put enormous care into evaluating every application.
What We Look For
We seek promising students who will contribute their communities—academic, social, local, national—in the future and to society throughout their lives.
While academic accomplishment is important, we consider and prioritize many other factors—strong personal qualities, special talents or excellences of all kinds, perspectives formed by unusual personal circumstances, and the ability to take advantage of available resources and opportunities.
In our application review process, we give careful, individual attention to each applicant. We seek to identify students who will be the best educators of one another—individuals who will inspire those around them during the conference and beyond.
As we read and discuss your application, many questions will be on our minds. Some things we consider:
Growth and potential
Our admissions process enables us to give deliberate and meticulous consideration of each applicant as a whole person. Keep in mind that there are no "right" or "wrong" answers in crafting your application. The strongest applications are not defined by numerical measurements of academic performance, but rather a genuine, authentic, and enthusiastic explanation that hints towards how you will contribute to the HTLC community and beyond.
Of course, no process is perfect, and certainly students who are not admitted will still see great success. We try, however, to ensure that a fair reading and consideration is given to each applicant who takes the time to apply.

As we read and discuss your application, many questions will be on our minds. Some things we consider:
Growth and potential
- Have you reached your maximum potential?
- Have you been stretching yourself?
- Do you have reserve power to do more?
- How have you used your time?
- Do you have initiative? Are you a self-starter? What motivates you?
- Do you have a direction yet? What is it? If not, are you exploring many things?
- Where will you be in one, five, or 25 years? Will you contribute something to those around you?
- What sort of human being are you now? What sort of human being will you be in the future?
- Do you care deeply about anything—intellectual? Extracurricular? Personal?
- What have you learned from your interests? What have you done with your interests? How have you achieved results? With what success or failure? What have you learned as a result?
- In terms of extracurricular, athletic, community, or family commitments, have you taken full advantage of opportunities?
- What is the quality of your activities? Do you appear to have a genuine commitment or leadership role?
- What choices have you made for yourself? Why?
- How open are you to new ideas and people?
- What about your maturity, character, leadership, self-confidence, warmth of personality, sense of humor, energy, concern for others, and grace under pressure?
- Will you contribute something to HTLC 2020 and to other students? Will you benefit from the conference experience?
- Would other students want to room with you, share a meal, be in a homeroom together, be teammates, or collaborate in a closely knit extracurricular group?
